Postoperative Course
at the Cardiac Surgery Ward

After the stay at the ICU, the patients will be transferred back to the cardiac surgery ward. Here the monitoring will be continued. At the so-called intermediate care unit patients will be monitored and observed until their condition is stable. If needed, the monitoring can be extended for as long as it is necessary.

In case of an uneventful course the patient will be transferred to a regular ward room the next day. Also here monitoring for the basic vital parameter such as ECG and blood pressure is available.
Most of the patients can be mobilized from the bed at the postoperative day three while ingestion is also started right after surgery and should be normalized at this time point.
At around one week after the procedure most of the patients have reached primary recovery, that no monitoring is necessary anymore.
Over the years the risk of postoperative complications could be reduced that far, which allows a transfer to a rehabilitative institution at around day ten after surgery.
By undergoing surgery the treatment of the patient is not finished yet. The further required therapy will be coordinated with your cardiologist and your primary care physician.
